Any scenario involving income, assets, or financial accounts in a country outside the US. This includes U.S. citizens living abroad, U.S. residents with foreign income, and transition years involving relocation.
They can be. Cross-border taxes often involve additional reporting requirements and harsher penalties for mistakes, especially when foreign assets or accounts are not properly disclosed.
Yes. Compliance ensures accuracy for the current year, but strategy focuses on reducing long-term tax liability, managing future decisions, and avoiding missed opportunities over time.
A US resident (or more formally, a U.S. tax resident) is someone who lives and earns primarily in the US, and must report their worldwide income every year to the IRS. This can be a U.S. passport holder, or a foreign citizen living in the U.S. with a green card (or H1B/L1/O1 visa), who is a U.S. resident.
A U.S. citizen is someone with a U.S. passport. When they reside in the U.S., they are considered U.S. tax residents. When they live abroad, they must still file a tax return every year, regardless of where they live, and it must include worldwide income. When U.S. citizens live aboard they are often referred to as U.S. expats.
Most tax firms consider it a success if they avoid errors and file on time. We focus on using the tax code deliberately. That means starting with strategy, modeling options, explaining trade-offs, and helping you make informed decisions, not defaulting to conservative assumptions or simply checking boxes.
We aim to identify at least one tax strategy that can be used on your current or next tax return that drives savings using perfectly legal, IRS-approved strategies.
Your introductory assessment call is a working session, not a sales pitch. In this 15-minute conversation, we assess whether your situation is well-suited to proactive tax strategy and whether Gambit is the right fit for you. We’ll discuss your income, assets, and upcoming decisions, identify where strategic leverage may exist, and answer your questions directly so you leave with clarity either way.
If there’s a strong fit, we’ll ask you to upload your prior-year return. From there, we prepare personalized recommendations and review them with you on a 45-minute Discovery Call, where we also walk through scope and share a fixed price for strategic tax preparation.
